How to use Smart Redact

  1. Add your PDF

Choose the file. It stays in your browser while Smart Redact looks for sensitive details.

  2. Review each match

Look through everything it found and decide what should go. Add your own words, or draw a box over anything else.

  3. Redact and check

Apply the redactions. The content is removed from the file, and Wispdf checks that it is really gone.

What Smart Redact does

Redacting a PDF means permanently removing sensitive details, such as ID or account numbers, so nobody can read or recover them. Smart Redact finds those details for you on your device: Social Security numbers, EINs, ITINs, card numbers, IBANs, bank routing numbers, phone numbers, emails, IP addresses, dates of birth and other dates. You review every match, then the content is truly removed and checked.

People use it to

  • Remove client Social Security numbers before sending a file to opposing counsel
  • Hide card and routing numbers on statements before sending them to a landlord
  • Take phone numbers and birth dates out of an HR report before it is shared

Questions about Smart Redact

Is Smart Redact free?
Smart Redact is part of Pro and the 7-Day Pass. Try Pro free for 7 days, no card needed. The on-device detection uses no AI credits, and it runs in your browser with no daily cap. An optional AI mode is coming soon, and it will use AI credits only if you choose to turn it on.
Does my file leave my device?
No. Smart Redact finds and removes sensitive details in your browser, so your file never leaves your device and nothing is uploaded. The optional AI mode is coming soon. When it opens, it will be opt-in, and it will send the extracted text, not the file, which is never used to train models.
What does Smart Redact find without AI?
The on-device detection in Smart Redact looks for Social Security numbers, EINs, ITINs, card numbers, IBANs, bank routing numbers, phone numbers, email addresses, IP addresses, dates of birth and other dates. You can add your own words and draw boxes by hand. An AI mode for names, companies, addresses and medical terms is coming soon.
Will Smart Redact catch everything?
No tool can promise that. Smart Redact can miss a detail written in an unusual format, and it can flag something that is not sensitive. That is why you review every match before anything is removed. Read the document once more before you share it, and use Redact PDF to black out anything extra by hand.
Can I redact a PDF on my phone?
Yes. Smart Redact works in any modern browser on iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows, Mac, Linux and Chromebook, with no app to install. Detection runs on whichever device you use. Very long PDFs are easier on a computer, since a phone has less memory to work with.
Is redacting the same as drawing a black box?
No. A black box drawn on top can often be moved, and the text underneath can still be copied or searched. Smart Redact removes the content itself, then checks that it is truly gone. For extra care, run Remove PDF Metadata afterwards to clear hidden details such as the author's name.
